The Smallbore section of the Guyana National Rifle Association (GNRA) in conjunction with Regional Director of the International Practical Shooting Confederation, (IPSC) Guyana, Mr. Harold Hopkinson will be holding its first IPSC Level 1 match at the GDF Rifle Ranges, Yarrowkabra, Linden Soesdyke Highway, today.
The organisers are inviting members of the public to witness this fascinating aspect of practical sport shooting. IPSC recognizes all the shooting disciplines – Handgun, Rifle, Shotgun, and Action Air.
To be a good IPSC shooter, one needs to blend accuracy, power, and speed into a winning combination. Multiple targets, moving targets, targets that react when hit, penalty targets, or even partially covered targets, obstacles, movement, competitive strategies, and other techniques are all a part of IPSC to keep shooters challenged and spectators engaged and entertained.
IPSC also emphasizes procedures for safe gun handling and strict adherence to the rules governing the sport. IPSC shooting is never a one dimensional shooting sport, no course of fire is ever the same, from one competition to the next.
Diversity is encouraged, to keep the sport from becoming too formalized, boring or standardized. Typically, competitors do not know in advance what to expect in any given match. IPSC only full power handguns are used, 9mm being the minimum.
For this shoot, competitors will be using ammunition from Winchester, Remington, Armscor Precision and Magtech, these bullets will be exiting the barrels of various firearms at average speeds of 820 miles per hour. These hollow and full metal jacketed projectiles will be moving towards IPSC certified targets and steel poppers at the GDF Rifle Ranges, Timehri at over 1200 feet per second.
There will be three stages, nicknamed Cluster Flak, Up Down and Do it, designed by Veteran Marksman, and multiple National Hand Champion, Harold “Topgun” Hopkinson, winner of the 2014 Suriname Practical Shooters Level 3, 2014 Open, in the Seniors Production division. He won from an international array of seasoned shooters. These three stages will be shot by all competent competitors.
The first stage will be “Cluster Flak” will consist of 15 IPSC Targets, and 9 no shoot penalty targets and two poppers. This will test the accuracy and speed of all marksmen present. Facing away from the stage, with gun holstered and the chamber empty, on the start signal from the Range Officer, the shooter will turn and engage all targets as they become visible.
The No Shoot penalty targets will be a challenge, when hit, means that 10 points is deducted from the shooter’s score. All this shooting must be done while moving down a small rectangular shooting box. On this stage the competitor will be shooting a minimum of 32 rounds.
The second stage “Up Down” is simple, where shooters will start at either side of an inverted “V”, with three targets on either side and two at the top of the “V”. With a round chambered, safeties on, on the start signal, the competitor will then move down a chosen side, then move back down the other side, while engaging the 10 IPSC certified targets. Though seemingly simple, it will also test the competency of the competitors. All ten (10) IPSC targets MUST be shot with the unsupported strong hand only. On this stage the competitor will shoot two rounds per target, a minimum of 16 rounds for 10 points.
The Third stage, “Do It” will consist of four (4) IPSC certified targets placed 25 feet from the first box, the second box will be 21 feet away from the targets. Targets will be 2 feet apart and the shooter MUST shoot a minimum of two shots from either box. Course of fire is, hands in above shoulders, gun loaded, safety on, facing away from targets at the start line.
On the start signal, shooter will turn, step into first box and engage targets. Eight (8) rounds minimum, maximum of 40 points.
