Government has announced the resignation of one of its top ministers. Minister of Human Services and Social
Security, Jennifer Webster, was not included in the lists that the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) submitted on Tuesday during Nomination Day at City Hall.
Yesterday, Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Roger Luncheon, said that Webster has been ailing for some time now and opted not to continue with her duties after this month.
The topic was specifically addressed by the spokesman yesterday during his weekly press conference at the Office of the President.
He said that during a recent Cabinet Ministers’ meeting, President Donald Ramotar “advised” that he has accepted the Minister’s submission of her notice of resignation effective April 30.
“The President disclosed that in her submission, the Minister indicated a lack of significant improvement on her health situation while conducting the fairly rigorous demands of a Minister of Government, particularly of the sector of Human Services and Social Security.”
Dr. Luncheon insisted that it was a deliberate decision made on account of her health. She wanted the issue to be addressed and this led to her decision to resign.
Indeed, there have been speculations following the exclusion of Webster’s name. She has served for years in the public sector, with her background in finance landing her a job as a Permanent Secretary in the Office of the President.
In 2006 she became a Member of Parliament with the portfolio of Minister within the Ministry of Finance. She was sworn in as the Minister of Human Services and Social Security in 2011 in the Donald Ramotar administration.
