Dear Editor,
I remember a different “Kit” Nascimento from the one that got the brunt of Freddie Kissoon’s column (Kaieteur News, April 7, 2015). I hesitated to pen this differing opinion, not ever wanting to get on the bad side of the columnist. But the urge kept pestering me. Like Mr. Kissoon, I do not particularly share the politics of Mr. Nascimento, but I stand in awe of his skills.Let me cite some examples and then some.
Way back (late 50s/early60s) Premier Cheddi Jagan had to ban “Kit” Nascimento from his weekly press conferences. There might be good reason for that action but we all know the real reason was that “Kit” stole the Premier’s thunder at every meeting. As listeners to the live radio broadcast (there was no television in British Guiana then) we listened with rapt attention when “Kit” spoke, and many tuned in just for him. If he was that good then, how much better is he now!
Burnham’s book “A Destiny to Mould” was not written by Burnham but compiled, edited, and put together by “Kit” Nascimento and R.A. Burrowes. This is the only written book-form legacy of our first and unforgettable president, thanks in part to “Kit” Nascimento.
When the Jonestown horror burst upon the world, it was “Kit” Nascimento that was rushed to the United States to face the international media that descended on the Guyana office there. This was a moment for crisis management like no other, and Mr. Nascimento did not disappoint. Due to him, Guyana was spared the dark third-world forebodings the world had presumed.
It seems to me that a seasoned professional like Mr. Nascimento doesn’t need the dapper dress and appearance suggested for a media and PR man. Those trappings are more required by newbies and the unaccomplished to boost their positions. “Kit” is above that. His expertise and experience and, most importantly, the perception of him by his clients allow him to frown upon “Alan Flusser pinstripe trousers, Kenneth Cole shirts, Gucci loafers, Armani neckties, and Guy Laroche cologne.”He can rightly blaze his own trail.
I do not know Mr. Nascimento personally, nor have I ever met him. I was happy to hear that he still has that distinguished and distinguishing accent that makes you listen up once he takes the mike. It doesn’t surprise me that he is “the media consultant for a number of important state sector institutions, private sector organizations and the tourism industry.”
“Kit” survives regardless of which party is in government. And in the pursuit of excellence the more there will be a premium for the services of the likes of him. I do not think “after the election … Nascimento would become a forgotten relic.” There will always be those who want quality and are willing to pay for it.
I guess, regardless of time, place, season, or climate, you just can’t keep a good man down, even when nearing his nineties.
