Shortly before presenting the respective winning teams with their prizes,
President of the Georgetown Dominoes Association (GDA) Faye Joseph urged the business community to support the sport and help alleviate the standard and popularity.
Joseph, whose brainchild it was to organise the International Competition which had teams from various countries within the Caribbean including Barbados, told the large gathering that she had responded to a challenge by the local affiliated clubs of the GDA to organise a competition that would involve other countries which they felt would help to popularise and improve the standard of the game here.
She admitted that it was a real challenge, but one she took on since she too felt that a tournament of such magnitude was essential for the sport locally, while it also gave players the opportunity to compete in an international atmosphere.
Joseph revealed that the tournament apart from being a success was a dream come true, adding that the support shown by Clubs and ardent fans of the game has set a platform for others to emulate.
According to Joseph, next year promises to be bigger and better.
“I think we’ve shown that Dominoes is more than just a past time game and can be
played on a big stage and could be lucrative. We wish that corporate entities support us next year”.
The ceremony, which was conducted at the President’s residence at Gaulding Place, South Ruimveldt, saw local club Rage cart off the first prize of US$5000 and the winning trophy, while Specialist ended second to take home US$2500.
Spartan the Gladiators finished third and received US$1500, while Dream Team occupied the fourth spot and collected US$1000.
Kanhai Samaroo was adjudged the Most Valuable Player (MVP), winning the maximum 18 games.
