Harry grabs 7-66, Imlach, Hubbard hit half centuries
By Zaheer Mohamed
A seven-wicket haul by Essequibo’s Keano Harry and half centuries by Tevin Imlach
and Malcolm Hubbard highlighted the opening day of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)/Raj Singh Insurance Brokers Inter-County U19 three-day tournament between Essequibo and Demerara yesterday at the Everest Cricket Club.
Left arm spinner Harry extracted considerable bounce and turn to finish with 7-66 from 31 overs as Demerara were bowled out 15 minutes before time for 261 in 105.2 overs after they were inserted.
Imlach and Ronaldo Renee gave the home team a bright start with a first wicket stand of 78 in favourable sunshine. Off-spinner Looknauth Chimkoo gave Essequibo the breakthrough by removing Renee for 29 (3×4). Imlach who struck six fours in his 51 then added a further 26 for the second wicket with Sherfene Rutherford (16) before Harry struck. He first uprooted the stumps of Rutherford and trapped both Harry and Travis Persaud (01) lbw to leave Demerara in a spot of bother at 114-4.
However, a fifth wicket stand of 66 between Ashkaya Persaud and Malcolm Hubbard steady the home team’s batting. The pair gradually grew in confidence and played a number of lovely shots on both sides of the pitch. Persaud hit fours and one six before he was lbw to Harry for 27. Hubbard continued to time the ball well, but just after reaching his half century off 82 deliveries with nine fours before he was bowled by Harry.
The left arm spinner continued to befuddle the batsmen and had Ershad Alli (11) caught before disturbing the stumps of Daniel Basdeo (00) leaving the score at 219-8. Chimkoo then had Tariq Dharanlall (03) lbw five runs later, but a last wicket partnership of 37 between Vivian Albert and Carlton Jacques propped up Demerara’s total. Albert stroked three fours to remain unbeaten on 30, while Jacques was caught off Akieni Adams for 20 with a solitary boundary. Chimkoo supported Harry with 2-53.
Essequibo opening pair of Satesh Latchana and Nathan Persaud safely negotiated the remaining two overs as their team closed the day on one without loss; both batsmen are yet to score. Play continues at 09:30 hrs today.
