Head Coach of the Guyana Defence Force Football Team making their debut
in the Caribbean Football Union Club Championship says they have put in lots of work over the past 6-8 weeks and will be going to T&T to play well.
The GDF will leave Guyana on Monday for the Twin Island Republic where they will compete in Group 2 which would be hosted at the Ato Boldon Stadium with Direct TV W Connection FC as the host team. SAP FC of Antigua and Barbuda and Waterhouse of Jamaica are the other two clubs that will contest this group, only the winner will advance.
Some aspects of the rigorous training over the past weeks would have taken the form of endurance, strength (gym) and speed strength which are all important for football players according to Thompson.
“We also did some integrated physical training, aerobic lactic training and a lot of work in the hills on the Linden Soesdyke Highway on three occasions, doing speed strength and cross country training and this completed the physical aspect of our training.”
While noting that this level of football is much higher than what they are accustomed to here, Thompson related that he has developed a new system of play which would be used in this tournament.
“We are playing a different type of system that we developed that would suit the quality of players that we have. We have basically moved from the 442 and we will play 4141. It is a system nobody has ever seen in this country. We play this way to secure the centre of the area.”
The team has been playing on a bigger square than is the norm in Guyana since Thompson is of the view that the fields they will encounter would be larger than in Guyana.
The sessions have been going well according to the former Senior National Coach, who informed that the hard physical, integrated sessions are now over and they are now fine tuning, automatizing and stabilizing the endurance level of the players whilst getting them to enjoy the game.
GDF is an all local based team Thompson pointed out: “I’m happy for my local guys, because let me say, this team, not that the opportunity wasn’t there for it, but, I want to produce local players, I believe in producing local players.”
Commenting on what goal (s) he is setting given that this is their debut at this level, Thompson stated, “We are looking to play well when we go because we trained for it, we worked hard for it and we owe it to ourselves and we don’t think no one should deprive us of it.”
The GDF Technical tactician believes that while W Connection is a top T&T Pro League side, his charges have been trained to adapt to the challenges they will encounter in the Twin Island Republic. “We are going to play well because we are ambassadors of Guyana.”
The GDF and Guyana’s top club side, Alpha United, the other competing team in the CFU Club Championship will be engaged in a warm up game today at the GDF ground from 16:00hrs ahead of next week’s matches.
Alpha will host Group 1 at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence and will welcome as their opponents, Central FC of Trinidad and Tobago and Suriname’s Inter Moengotapoe.
