Four persons are now homeless after a fire of unknown origin destroyed their two-storey house at Vryheid’s Lust Squatting Area, East Coast Demerara, around 08:50 hrs yesterday.
Those homeless have been identified as Orlando Worrell, his wife, Sita Ramotar, his stepdaughter Amanda Parasram and Andy Parasram.
The fire reportedly started in one of the rooms in the bottom flat of the building.
When Kaieteur News visited the scene, dozens of residents were seen outside the family’s now destroyed property, offering their support.
According to information received, Worrell and his wife shared the top flat while his step daughter and Andy Parasram occupied the lower flat. No one could say how the fire started.
Worrell said he was at work when he received a call that his house was on fire.
“When I come home, this (destroyed building) is what I see. I don’t know what happened. No one was at home. Everyone went to work,” Worrell said.
Although the fire started in Amanda Parasram’s flat, she could not say what could have caused it. She explained that in the section where the fire started, she had nothing flammable.
The affected persons believed that the fire was a deliberate act by “jealous” residents in the area.
“The stepfather (Orlando Worrell) had some problem with some people in the village and they believe the people set the house on fire,” a neighbour who requested anonymity told this newspaper.
No one reported hearing any noise or explosions coming from the property.
Persons only knew the house was on fire when they saw flames.
Orlando Worrell and his family lived there for the past nine years.
