Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) will begin the defense of their Georgetown
Cricket Association’s (GCA) Noble House Seafoods two-day second division title against Malteenoes at DCC on April 11 in one of eight first round games in 2015 tournament.
The East Bank Demerara based Seafoods entity renewed their sponsorship of this competition for the fifth consecutive year at a presentation ceremony at the Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) pavilion yesterday afternoon and according to Mr. Piercy Corlette, who represented Noble House Seafoods, the GCA continues to do an excellent job in running the 16-team competition which is expected to climax with a grand final by May month end.
The tournament is divided into four zones. Players above the age of 19 who have represented Guyana at the senior level within the last three years and their County in the last two years at senior level are debarred from playing in this competition while players who have played First-Division cricket during the same year of this competition are required to play at least two matches in the zonal stage of this tournament to qualify to play in the semi-finals and final.
All matches will start at 11:00hrs and conclude at 17:30hrs on Saturdays. A minimum of 90 overs has to be bowled in the day but while the same commencement and concluding time is set for Sundays, a minimum of 75 overs, plus 15 must be bowled in the last hour.
The players will have a 30-minute break for Lunch from 14:00hrs while the two top teams from each zone will advance to the quarter finals. Twelve (12) points plus bonus points will be awarded for an outright win while six points plus bonus points will be awarded for winning ‘first innings’ points. An Abandoned match earns each team four points plus their bonus points.
The new regulation for boundaries at GYO, GNIC and MYO says that because of the small size of those grounds sixes will only be allowed when the ball is hit over the straight boundaries but balls hit to, or over the square boundaries shall be deemed a four.
Under-19 fast bowlers can only bowl six overs in one spell and only nine overs in any one session while fast bowlers must bowl at least a quarter of the total number of overs in any innings that exceeds 20.
One point will be deducted for every over that is not accounted for in each innings during the zone stage. Six runs will be added to the opposition total for each over of pace not accounted for in each innings.
This is to encourage fast bowling at this level at a time when most teams in Guyana tend to overuse spinners and at times even use them to open the bowling. President of the GCA Roger Harper thanked Noble House Seafoods for their continued support while Chairman of the Competitions Committee Shawn Massiah explained the rules of the competition to the Captains and Coaches of the 16 teams after the presentation yesterday.
The first round will see Zone A matches being contested; DCC entertains MSC while GYO host Diplomats.
In Zone B; Everest will be at home to GNIC and Third Class play Ace Warriors at GNIC while in Zone C; Police are at home to TSC and GDF welcome Saints. (Sean Devers)
