Police sources have identified the driver who abandoned his car, PMM 6011 on the Zeeburg,
West Coast Demerara (WCD) Public Road Sunday night after killing a father of three, as 22-year-old Rajendra Hoosner.
Hoosner reportedly resides a few houses from the victim, 37-year-old Odit Narine Singh, a taxi driver of Lot 716 Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo. He also stays with his father at Timehri, East Bank Demerara.
A police source yesterday confirmed that they searched the home of Hoosner’s mother and several other locations, but have failed to locate him.
“We received information that he might be by his father in Timehri, but we are going to find him. Once his photograph gets out there, people will start calling,” the source noted.
He added that he was informed by ranks who were doing patrol duty on the night of the accident that Hoosner was driving so fast that they (police) had to “slow down and allow him to carry on, hoping that he would slow down when he realized the police were not behind him.”
“The ranks said he was driving so fast and he was driving all over the road. Dem boys (police) say they were praying that this man didn’t hit anyone. And we are getting information that he was under the influence of alcohol, that is why he failed to stop at the roadblock,” the source said.
Odit Narine Singh was struck down around 23:00 hrs on Sunday while waiting to cross the public road to get back to his taxi base. Singh’s body ended up under a parked truck. He was pronounced dead at 01:15 hrs on Monday at the Leonora Cottage Hospital.
Indira Singh, the dead man’s sister said that she was at home sleeping when a driver, who works at the same taxi service with her sibling, visited her home and informed her that her brother was involved in an accident.
The woman said that when they arrived at the hospital, the doctors said that the man died from a punctured heart and bleeding in the brain.
The car that was involved in the accident is at the Leonora Police Station. It is a rented vehicle.
