Just under a year after retaining his World Boxing Council (WBC) world featherweight
title against local multiple champion and world rater, Clive Atwell, Johnny Gonsalves surrendered the same title following a crushing loss to American, Gary Russell, at the Palms Casino Resort, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA last Saturday.
According to boxrec, Russell floored Gonzalez once in round three and twice in round four to force referee, Tony Weeks to call a halt to the bout at 37secs of the fourth round. The Mexican has now lost 9 of his 54 fights and has KOed 48 of his opponents. Gonzalez had successfully defended his WBC featherweight title by unanimous technical decision over Atwell in Acapulco, Mexico, but he left the bout with a few bumps and bruises. The most telling one, a cut over his left eye from an accidental head-butt, had forced officials to stop the bout and go to the scorecards where Gonsalves was awarded the bout after being ahead at the time of the stoppage. Up to then the scorecards were 99-89, 96-92 and 98-90 all in favour of the Mexican. Gonsalves
then went on to retain the title against Jorge Arce after the referee stopped the bout in the 11th round.
Atwell’s handlers had cried foul saying that the bout was stopped prematurely. The Guyanese has since rebounded with a points decision win over Jamaican, Sakima Mullings last month for the vacant Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) super/lightweight belt. He had signaled an ambition to battle for the title once again but it is not clear whether Atwell, who has since returned to Dominica, will try to influence his management to secure another shot at the title.
