– confident the Organisers will deliver beyond expectations
By Rawle Welch
Not very often corporate entities express delight at being approached
for sponsorship, but the Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Company (GT&T) conveyed such a position shortly before handing over a cheque worth $300,000 to Co-Director of the Petra Organisation Troy Mendonca, during a simple ceremony that was held in the Company’s Canteen yesterday.
The sponsorship is to go towards the hosting of the inaugural Busta Soft Shoe Football Competition which kicks off on April 9 and ends on May 5 at three venues.
Making the presentation on behalf of the entity was Senior Marketing representative Anjanie Hackett, who in her remarks said they were pleased that the Organisation had called on them for support, citing the strong relationship with the two principals Mendonca and Marlan Cole whose work in youth development and football directly over the years have left an indelible mark on the sport.
“We were quite willing to offer support when they approached us and we are confident that they will deliver beyond our expectations,” Hackett said.
Mendonca in response thanked the Company for exhibiting confidence in them and promised to deliver a tournament that will meet or even surpass their expectations.
He said the hosting on the ceremony to make the presentation speaks volumes about the relationship that they have with GT&T and is a clear expression of the faith the Company repose in them.
Mendonca, whose association with GT&T started a few years ago following the staging of the Cellink Tournament, told the media that he is extremely happy that GT&T had once again seen it fit to offer its support and expressed gratitude on behalf of the Organisation.
Twenty-four teams will be vying for prize monies in excess of $1.2 million along with trophies, while every team will benefit from monetary incentives according to final positioning.
The teams will be divided into six groups of four with the top two from each and the four best third place finishers going forward to the knockout stage.
Additionally, each team will be provided with ten jerseys compliments of Busta which will carry the Company’s logo.
The winning team carts off $600,000, 2nd place- $300,000, 3rd place -$200,000 and 4th place -$100,000.
Teams will have only five players including a goalkeeper on the field at any time and the playing area will be reduced in size and played on turf.
