As part of its cricket development initiative, the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) has collaborated with the USA Global Cricket Academy (USAGCA) for their youth tour of Guyana which began with the North American U-18 team, led by an accomplished 60 from Kushal Gangi, beating the National U-17 side by two runs at Everest yesterday.
In a game which began 220 minutes late due to early morning showers and reduced from 50 to 35 overs the visitors batted first and reached 151-8 when their overs expired in hazy sunshine and on a traditional slow Everest track which offered plenty of assistance for the spinners.
But Josh Patel captured 4-25 and got support from Guruhshu Sharma (3-31) as the National U-17s fell for 150 all out despite a solid 54 from opener Raymond Perez in an exciting finish which saw the home needing two off the last ball with their last pair at the crease.
The last over began with 10 runs needed to win and the last pair of Kevin St Clair and Teven McCalmont (15*) gathered eight runs from the first five balls and with the small but vocal crowd on its feet, Sinclair pulled Derrick Narine to the fielder at mid-wicket to spark jubilant celebrations among the American’s camp.
After Sagar Patel fell for one at 8-1, Gangi, who played several audacious shots and particularly strong on the leg-side joined Sharma and the pair took the score 66 before Sharma departed.
But when Darshan Persaud had Gangi neatly stumped at 112-4 nobody except Chetram Persaud, who hit a six in his unbeaten 20, reached double figures as left-arm spinner Ashmead Nedd, the son of former Guyana off-spinner and National U-17 Coach Gavin Nedd, grabbed 3-28 and got support from Persaud (2-18).
When National Colts began their run chase Perez and Bashar Yadram (15) added 40 for the second wicket before Patel, who removed the first three batsmen, went to work in overcast conditions. Sharma completed the job to see his team to a thrilling win.
At DCC, the home team made 146-7 from 30 overs in reply to the 148-5 made by the American U-13 team. Sachin Singh top scored with 52 for DCC but only Shamar McLean (22) of the other batsmen offered resistance as Adi Sharma took three wickets for the hosts.
Yash Kangura (25) and Akhil Kumar (22) scored the most runs for the visitors while Jason Holder had two wickets for DCC.
In the other match played yesterday at Wales, West Demerara U-15 beat the North Americans.
The action continues today, the U.S.A Cricket Academy U-18s take on Berbice U-19 at Port Mourant Ground, the Cricket Academy U-15s oppose East Coast U-15 at Enmore and the Cricket Academy’s U-13 face GCC U-13 at Bourda.
