The Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) 50-over Under-19 tournament commenced yesterday with East Coast
hammering East Bank by eight wickets at the Enterprise Community Centre ground on the East Coast of Demerara to start their campaign in an auspicious fashion.
East Bank batted first on a slow track in sunny conditions and were bowled out for 139 in 41 overs before the home team hit off the required runs, easily reaching 140-2 in 28 overs to win in emphatic fashion.
Repu Babooram was clean bowled by pacer Akesh Rampersaud for a duck to leave the score on 10-1 but Daniel Barker (16) and the talented Ryan Shun (12) steadied the ship somewhat by taking the score to 32 before Shun was also bowled by the impressive Rampersaud.
Urged on by a small but vocal home crowd, off-spinner Jaydeo Mana quickly sent back Ershad Ali and Sheldon Chapman when they were both well set for big scores after Barker was removed.
The 17-year-old Ali, who resides in Alexander Village, looked accomplished in his confident 37 aided by a couple of boundaries but the left-hander, who has stopped playing cricket due to work commitments, was caught and bowled by the off-spinner to break his 49-run fourth wicket partnership with Mark Hamilton, who made 14.
Chapman was trapped LBW to Mana for 20 but none of the other batsmen except Paul Thomas who struck a rearguard unbeaten 20, got into double figures. Off-Spinners Mana, 2-10 from seven impressive overs and Vivian Albert, who grabbed 2-28 from eight overs, exploited the spin-friendly track beautifully after Rampersaud had bagged 2-21 from five overs at the top of the innings.
East Coast were off to a solid start by Devraj Chunilall who dominated a 55-run opening stand with Vishwanauth
Ramlakhan, who contributed six before the versatile Ali got rid Ramlakhan.
Hamilton then trapped Chunilall, who played some attractive shots in his 38 LBW, to leave the score at 90-2. Chunilall’s delightful innings was decorated with five fours on the large ground.
Albert then clobbered two sixes and two fours in a rapid undefeated 35 and got excellent support from National Under-15 Captain Bhaskar Yadram who hammered five boundaries in his 27 not out as the game was done and dusted by 15:30 hrs.
Today at Enterprise, from 09:30hrs, East Coast face Georgetown in a clash of the heavyweights.
