A husband found guilty of stabbing his reputed wife to death at a city hotel has been jailed for 43 years Yesterday, Justice Franklyn Holder handed down the sentence to Vinod Balgobin, who was found guilty of murdering his wife, Maryann Nauth.
The sentence was handed down at the High Court in Georgetown after a mixed 12- member jury selected to oversee the trial returned a unanimous guilty verdict. The Judge had initially sentenced the 35 year- old Albouystown resident to 45 years in prison; but deducted two years for the time he spent in prison pending trial.
Initial reports are that Balgobin stabbed his reputed wife no less than 30 times and left her lying in a blood soaked bed in a City Hotel on May 11, 2013.
The 31-year old mother of three children of Lot 110 Vryheids Lust North, East Coast Demerara, was discovered lying in a room of the K &VC Hotel, located on South Road, Georgetown.
Hotel employees recounted, that Nauth’s lifeless body was found with a knife stuck in the centre of her chest and a rose and a photograph next to her. The gruesome discovery was made hours before Mother’s Day.
Relatives had reported that the woman was last seen in the company of her estranged husband. The couple of 13 years was separated after the woman reported that she had endured constant abuse at the hands of her spouse.
However, the victim’s family members claimed that the man was attempting reconciliation. Relatives reported that Nauth left the home after she received a telephone call from her estranged husband. She was going to
collect money for the children from him. However, the suspect is said to have fled the scene immediately after the incident.
Balgobin was captured by police ranks days later, as he attempted to flee the jurisdiction; he was at Supenaam en route to Venezuela. The man is said to have confessed to the crime.
The suspect reportedly told police investigators that he became infuriated after he saw a tattoo on the woman’s abdomen while they were in the process of making love; he stabbed her repeatedly about the body after accusing her of having an affair.
A post mortem examination conducted on the victim’s body, revealed that she died as a result of the injuries she sustained.
During his summing up yesterday, Justice Holder recounted the evidence of 19 witnesses, who were called upon to testify by State Prosecutor Teeshana Lake. Lake presented the case in association with Attorneys -at – Law Orintha Schmidt and Shawnette Austin. The accused was represented by Attorney -at- Law, Compton Richardson.
Almost four hours after they left the courtroom to deliberate, the jury returned with the verdict. The announcement was made in the presence of relatives of both the victim and the accused; some of whom wept upon hearing the verdict. The judge thereafter asked the accused, who stood in the prisoner’s dock if he knew of any reason why the court should not sentence him.
“No sir,” Balgobin replied in almost inaudible voice. Judge Holder then told the man that the gruesome act of killing your wife left the children without a mother and forced them to live with emotional scars for the rest of their lives. The judge noted, too, that the act was premeditated in that, Balgobin invited the woman to her death.
In passing the sentence, Justice Holder stated that Balgobin is required to serve 27 years in prison before he is eligible for parole.
