Linden’s Chantoba Bright shone at Athletics’ Association of Guyana (AAG) CARIFTA
Games Trials yesterday at the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Ground when she became one of two athletes from the Mining Town to attain the qualifying standards.
Bright sprang to a distance of 5.53 metres in the Under-18 Long Jump event that was better than the 5.40m qualifying standard that the AAG set. Bright achieved the mark against the backdrop of a heavy run-up and overcast weather conditions.
Sprinter, Compton Caesar, who came through the ranks at the National Schools’ Championships, representing Region 10 as well, equaled the 10.7 seconds standard to win the Boy’s 100m U-18 race, which also gave him the qualification nod for CARIFTA Games.
Kenisha Phillips fell short of the qualifying mark when she ran 12.1 seconds in the 100m Girl’s U-18 race that had a qualifying mark of 11.9s. She finished second in the 400m in 58.0 seconds, which Natricia Hooper won in 57.7 seconds. Avon Samuels was third in the event with a time of 58.6 seconds. The qualifying mark was 57.0 seconds.
South American Youth gold medalist, Jason Yaw clocked 49.4s, winning the U-18 Boy’s 400m while triple CARIFTA Games gold medalist, Cassey George, despite cramping, cruised to a win in the U-18 Girl’s 1500m race in 4:53.8s.
Junior sprint ace, Tevin Garraway, who just last November broke Julian Edmonds’ 22-year-old National Schools’ U-20 100m record, won the event comfortably in 10.7s that was split seconds outside of the 10.5s qualifying standards in the event.
Ornesto Thomas ran away with the 1500m Boy’s U-20 race in 4:15.3s while Matthew McKenzie won the U-18 equivalent in 4:18.1s. Deja Smartt returned to competitive athletics when she won the female 100m U-20 race in 12.2 seconds. Merisha Carter won the U-20 female 400m event in 1:01.2 seconds. The trials continue today.
