As the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) readies itself to host the
North American & Caribbean Rugby Association (NACRA) clash against Barbados, Banks DIH assuaged the burden of the undertaking when Communications Manager Troy Peters handed over a cheque for an undisclosed sum to President of the entity Peter Green yesterday in the Company’s Boardroom.
Peters, who acted on behalf of the Company, reminded the gathering that included Head Coach Theodore Henry, Secretary of the Union Terrence Grant, Team Manager Robin Roberts and Committee members Keith Whyte and Daniel Anderson, of Banks DIH’s long association with the sport, informing that the entity will continue to be a major supporter of the game in the future.
He urged fans to come out in their traditional colours (green and yellow) to support the team as it aims to start the defence of its title on a positive note against the Bajans tomorrow, at the National Park Playfield.
The sponsorship, being offered under the Banks Beer brand is a very popular beer in both Guyana and Barbados.
Green in his remarks was also quick to point out that while Barbados has traditionally been seen as not so tough an opponent, over the years that view has been changed, citing recent skirmishes against the two teams as very competitive.
He, however, expressed optimism that given Guyana’s status as the premier team in NACRA in both formats combined with its preparations which he described as being very thorough, he expects the ‘Green Machine’ to prevail comfortably.
“We are treating Barbados as a dangerous adversary and will be going all out to win the game to start on a successful note in our title defence,” Green said.
He added that the cost of hosting the game has placed an enormous burden on the Union’s coffers, but applauded Banks DIH for answering their prayers.
He too echoed the sentiments expressed by Peters when he said that the Company has always been a consistent supporter of rugby over a long period of time.
Henry when asked to compare the team of last year against the current one said that this present unit is much fitter, a situation he credited to the preparations currently ongoing for both formats.
He closed by stating that the team is fit and rearing to get into action against the Bajans who arrive sometime today, at the Ogle Airport.
Meanwhile, the Union has released the names of 27 players and they are: Cyon Kitt, Ryan Gonsalves, Claudius Butts, Joseph Rahaman, Avery Corbin , AllainCrawford, Kevon David, Rickford Cumminns, Rondell Mc Arthur, Theodore Henry, Richard Staglon, Jason Tyrell, Phabion Joseph, Godfrey Broomes, Dwayne Schroeder, Peabo Hamilton, Jose Felicien, Lancelot Adonis, Leon Greaves, Jamal Angus, JermaineProwell, Grantley Williams, Akeem Fraser, Troy Bascom, Blaise Bailey, Ronald Mayers and Delroy Gordon.
