As the executive of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) continues to address the development of local pugilists in preparation for participation in the 2016 Brazil Olympics, the selection committee (GBA) has shortlisted a competent team of boxers and officials to represent this country at the inaugural Tri Nation Inter Guiana competition between their counterparts from French Guiana and Suriname, scheduled for French Guiana.
The tournament is scheduled to get underway on March 14 and several boxers have been selected including woman boxers Taseka Howard (54kgs) and Dwon Thompson (80kgs). The male team comprises elite boxers Delon Charles (56kgs), Aquincy Harvey and Jason Phillips (64kgs), Glenroy Smith and Eon Bancroft (69kgs), Dennis Thomas (81kgs) and Trevon King (90kgs).
Two coaches will be in charge of the boxers including Cuban, Francisco Hernandez Roldan and Steel Crawford while Germin Craig and Medford Wilson will travel in the capacity of referee/judge. The manger is Gordon Nedd.
Meanwhile, boxing officials said that the cost of the trip is somewhat prohibitive, just over one million dollars, and are appealing to the Government and members of the corporate community for assistance to address this expense.
President of the GBA, Steve Ninvalle said that this cost includes travelling, accommodation and meals, visa fees and ferry fees. “Our boxers have shown, by their commitment and dedication that they are deserving of such opportunities,” said Mr. Ninvalle. The team is expected to leave on March 11.
The above tournament was birthed just last year after Mr. Ninvalle engaged in dialogue with his counterparts from Suriname and French Guiana with the aim of strengthening relations while creating opportunities for international exposure for his charges.
Readers will also remember when a team of two French boxers, Leonardo Mosquea and Kesney Joseph, accompanied by the Technical Director of the French Boxing Association, Jack Chinon arrived in Guyana and held discussions with Mr. Ninvalle on a wide cross section of boxing issues.
Consequently, the GBA President had dispatched an email to President of the French Boxing Association, Rolland Robeiri, to discuss Guyana’s participation in those championships as well as devise ways of strengthening relations between the two entities. The GBA President had engaged the principals in fruitful discussions and it is those negotiations that are now bearing fruit.
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
