Hamza Eastman (Team Coco’s) overpowered his rivals to capture the first leg of the Cheddi Jagan
Memorial cycle road race which took place yesterday on the West Demerara. Eastman clocked One Hour 54 Minutes 50 Seconds to win the 50-mile event which attracted 47 starters and commenced at Wales Police Station en route to Busy Park on the East Bank of Essequibo before returning to finish at Schoonard.
Michael Anthony took the runner up spot while Paul Choo Wee Nam placed third, Alonzo Greaves fourth followed by Paul De Nobrega and Orville Hinds respectively to close out the top six. Eastman and Anthony captured two prime prizes each while Mark Harris and Hinds had one apiece.
Christopher Griffith won the junior category ahead of Raphael Leung and Andrew Hicks. The veteran riders turned back at Uitvlugt after also starting at Wales and ended at Schoonard with Junior Niles of Team Coco’s maintaining dominance with another victory along with two primes.
Niles’ winning time was One Hour 18 Minutes 27 Seconds, Ian ‘Deaf Boy’ Jackson placed second and Kennard Lovell third. Deeraj Garbaran was tops in the Mountain Bike race while Michael Holder claimed the runner up spot and Juilo Melville third. Anthony Ferrier was the veteran over-60 winner.
The second leg will be held this Sunday in Berbice and while the third and final stage will take place in Essequibo on March 22. Speaking after the event, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony congratulated the winners and thanked the others for participating.
He also commended the Director of Sport Neil Kumar, Coach Hassan Mohamed and the Guyana Police Force. The event was sponsored by Cell King.
