A 26-year-old prison warder miraculously escaped death yesterday after he came into contact with an exposed electrical wire in the Lusignan, East Coast Demerara (ECD) prison.
The incident occurred just about 11:30 hrs during a routine exercise conducted in the Solitary Confinement area also called the “strong cell.”
Solitary Confinement is a form of imprisonment in which a prisoner is isolated from any human contact, though often with the exception of members of prison staff.
The injured rank has been identified as O’Neil Henry of New Amsterdam, Berbice. He sustained injuries to his head.
Kaieteur News was unable to confirm the severity of his injuries. However, up to press time he was being treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) and is said to be in a stable condition.
According to information received, Henry along with other warders was doing a routine search in the solitary confinement area when he walked into the exposed wire.
The wire was reportedly dangling at the entrance to one of the doors. Henry was hit in the head by high voltage which left him in a semi-unconscious state for hours.
Director of Prisons, Welton Trotz, could not be reached for a comment yesterday; however, this newspaper was told that an investigation has been launched.
