Edward B. Beharry Company Ltd, one of a few members of the corporate community that has consistently pledged significant support to rugby in Guyana made another major contribution to the sport when Marketing
Director Anjuli Beharry-Strand handed over US$10,000 to President of the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) Peter Green, during a simple ceremony held in the Company’s Boardroom on Robb Street yesterday.
The money represents sponsorship that is to go towards the Sevens team (Green Machine) preparation and participation in competitions leading up to 2016 Olympics qualification.
“It really is an honour and a pleasure to sponsor the Rugby team again, their professionalism and dedication along with their passion for the sport is why we continue to support them” a beaming Beharry-Strand told the gathering of media operatives, Union officials and players.
The considerable largesse was also biggest donation made by any member of the corporate community to the Union ever and according to Patron Christopher ‘Kit’ Nascimento it is the fervent wish of the Union that other members of the Private Sector see it fit to come forward and offer critical support to a team that has earned the right of support from every sphere across this country due to its unrivalled success.
The goodwill according to Union Treasurer Roger Perreira is now responsible for 70% of the projected US$100,000 budgeted to send the team to the June 13 – 14 North American and Caribbean Rugby Association (NACRA) 7’s Championship in North Carolina, USA.
Additionally, Nascimento disclosed that the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) has been the leader in terms of the volume of support the Union has received so far and this assistance also includes the contractual agreement with recently appointed Technical Director (TD) of the national programme Angus Thomson, who arrived recently to spearhead the team’s preparations for overseas engagements.
Beharry, who has taken the opportunity to visit the team’s practice sessions said, “I’ve personally watch them play, I’ve watch them practice and I’ve had the pleasure of sitting down and chatting with most of them individually and I must say that they’re really dedicated to what they do”.
The Company’s Marketing Director also noted that “there’s not enough invested in Sports here in Guyana unfortunately because there is so much talent out there, it’s a shame, so to even be able to send these gentlemen out there to make a name for Guyana and do us proud, it’s such a pleasure as a company and we will continue to support the team and we wish them all of the best of luck”.
Green in his remarks thanked the Company for its steadfast commitment to the team, adding that he is optimistic that they will do Guyana proud. The Union Head said because of the Company’s notable support, it has managed to prod other corporate entities into recognising the feats of the team and come forward and pledge support, especially since they’ve been able to see positive results.
“They do not put their hands in their pockets for sentiments, but rather for positive results,” Green remarked. He added that he is hoping that the new TD could take the team out of the pond that it is stuck in and take it into the ocean to swim with the sharks, referring to the team moving from regional champions to be able to consistently perform at the Elite level.
Head Coach Theodore Henry also thanked the Company for what he said is a true display of sustained confidence in the team, adding that with their tangible support, he could guarantee that the heights that this team has reached in the past few years would not have been possible without their support.
“In the same breath, I want to ask others to show the same faith in us so that we can surpass where we’re at right now and move on to even bigger things. One of my goal as a coach and I speak for all the players as well, is to be on the International scene on a consistent basis and in order for that to be accomplished, we need a whole lot of financial support to play more competitive games, rather than playing regional competition because when you play on the International scene it’s two different levels of play so consistent play equal results, but it requires consistent financial support as well” Henry said.
Nascimento, who is the dynamo behind the side’s push to have maximum funding from both the private and public sectors, reminded that the National 7’s Rugby Team is the only sporting team in Guyana that can still qualify for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro next year.
He said no other team can do that and boasted that the team has earned the right to be at the tournament which could allow them to qualify for the Rio Olympics.
According to him, that in its self is a huge accomplishment.
