Dear Mr. Editor,
The Management of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club is once again expressing its frustration over the sad state of affairs at the Area ‘H’ ground and the failure of the relevant authorities to take the necessary
action to correct this situation.
Over the last two years we have been complaining about the work performance and ethics of the relevant authority in charge of the Area ‘H’ ground but instead of seeing improvement, the situation has gotten worse.
The ground is full of garbage with several piles being there for months, the grass and bushes are very high around the boundary boards and the three pavilions while in the cricket field itself, the grass is high at the eastern end.
The southern pavilion continues to have a vulgar sign written by unknown persons despite media coverage of same over one month ago. The multi-million dollars sanitary facility is in a sad state of neglect, the water connection is loose and the water is flooding areas around the all weather court.
For the last eight years, the Town Council has not provided security lights or security for one of its most expensive assets.
The Town Council upon a publication of a letter to the Editor in the national newspapers had withdrawn the services of the Caretaker but he returned last week and there has been no improvement.
Club members are still forced to prepare pitches for matches and to clean the venue. The Caretaker is away from the venue 95% of the time and is very disrespectful to members of the Club. Two members of the club were verbally abused on Monday February 6, 2015 during the hosting of the semifinals of the Club’s Silver Jubilee Tapeball tournament.
What is of great concern to the Club is the failure of the Mayor and Town Council to implement its own policy over the uses of the Area ‘H’ ground. A group of unstructured footballers were allotted Mondays and Fridays while the several cricket teams of the Club – Under-13, 15, 17, 19, 21, Females, Second Division and First Division were given Tuesday to Thursday from 15:00 – 18:00hrs to practice.
Our players which include numerous West Indies, Guyana and Berbice players are unable to properly practice as the footballers set up goal posts and play less than twenty feet away. I believe that it is only a matter of time before another Phil Hughes incident happens at the venue but our club will not accept responsibilities for any such incident.
I recall reading a Guyana Chronicle article on Wednesday February 18, 2015, where a young child had his skull fractured by a cricket ball while passing the DCC ground and believes that it is only a matter of time before a footballer is hurt by a cricket ball.
It is quite frustrating for the cricketers which include numerous females to only be able to hit the ball one side of the wicket and for batsmen and bowlers to wait for the footballers to kick football on or just off the pitch while the female and Under-15 cricketers have complained to Management about the usage of incident language.
The western end of the outfield has also been badly destroyed with a huge part left grassless by the football players. We would not want the footballers to stop playing at the venue but they should do so on the days allotted to them. I am calling on the Mayor and Town Council to make sure that the footballers become properly organised so that their leaders who would be accountable for any problems that arise. I would like to praise the basketballers who under the leadership of Mr. Vibert Garrett has organised themselves and are playing in numerous tournaments and are mostly disciplined.
The RHTY&SC stands ready to assist football in the township but the players must organise themselves. I am also appealing to President Donald Ramotar, Ministers Norman Whittaker and Dr. Frank Anthony to intervene in this sad state of affairs as players the likes of Shemaine Campbelle, Erva Giddings, Plaffiana Millington, Jason Sinclair, Askay Homraj, Delbert Hicks, Brandon Prashad, Cylus Tyndall, Kevlon Anderson and many others are affected in the preparation for county and national duties.
The club is also urging the Management of the Town Council to either ensure the Caretaker fulfills his duties or find a replacement. The Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club was responsible for the upgrading of the Area ‘H’ ground when it raised millions of dollars to fence the venue, constructed an internal fence, an all weather concrete court, three pavilions, two concrete sight screens, score board and charity kitchen among other projects.
Your sincerely,
Hilbert Foster
