– AAG given half-hour slot on programme for athletics
After approximately five years of construction, numerous delays and setbacks that landed some of the contractors reportedly before the Courts, the Synthetic Track and Field Facility at Leonora will be officially
opened on March 27.
While Government, through the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport undertook the construction of the facility, the press release on its opening came through the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) following a visit to Leonora yesterday.
The facility, which commenced construction in 2010 had a number of delays and setbacks over the years and was expected to cost US$5M to complete, at the time of the last update on the cost of the facility last year in 2013.
The construction of Guyana’s first facility was included in a budgeted amount of $392,500,000 million for four areas four years ago, but it was unclear then how much was specifically set out for the construction of Synthetic Track and Field Facility.
“Athletics will form part of the showcase for the opening of the Leonora Stadium next month. On Wednesday (February 18, 2015), the Minister of Sport Dr. Frank Anthony, Director of Sports Neil Kumar and Athletics Association, President Aubrey Hutson visited the facility,” the AAG said in a press release.
“Track and Field has been given a half-hour slot. The Opening of the facility should be an evening affair, with events under lights,” the AAG continued in a press release. Up to press time yesterday, there was no correspondence from the Ministry of Sport on the opening of the facility.
According to the AAG release, Hutson said that given the limited time slot, a few of the shorter distances will be staged. The disclosure said that the top athletes from the CARIFTA Games trial set for March 7-8 will be on show during the half-hour of athletics.
In addition, the athletics association took the opportunity to inform that it has postponed its High School Championships to next year. “The AAG was hoping to host the best athletes from nine-districts but all arrangements were not finalized in-time to host the event,” the release noted.
