After several weeks of competitive action the wheat will be separated from the crop when the four surviving teams in the Mayor’s Cup Football Championship battle for a spot in the finals when semi-final action in that tournament resumes tomorrow evening at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) Ground, Bourda.
This was decided after matches in the quarter finals concluded Sunday evening last and Conquerors defeated GFC 2-0 after their game went into extra time. Daniel Wilson (90+5) and Sheldon Holder (90+19) made the difference for Fruta Conquerors moments before Western Tigers breezed past Ann’s Grove 3-0 in the night’s feature game. Randolph Wagner (90+13) and Michael Pedro (90+23 & 90+25) netted Western Tigers’ success in a match that went all the way down to the wire.
The Fruta Conquerors/GFC shindig was a ferocious battle as both teams attempted to establish their dominance and move forward. The confrontations were furious and after one such, Steve Wilson of the GFC was cited for a serious infringement and earned himself a red card.
But even before that, Conqueror’s striker, Sheldon Holder, almost broke the deadlock when he received a pass square in front of GFC goalmouth. He slammed in a shot which lashed into the inner part of the goalpost merely seconds to the final whistle and sent the game into extra time.
Holder’s teammate, Romario James was also cited for a mild infringement and received a yellow card in the 60th minute, while two players from Tigers, Randolph Wagner (90+13) and Michael Pedro (90+25) also received yellow card citations as both teams threw down the gauntlet.
The two semi finals will be contested tomorrow evening when Conquerors play Western Tigers at 19:00hrs, while Slingerz will tackle Pele in the feature attraction two hours later. The final will be contested between the respective winners, while the losers will battle for the third place next Sunday.
The winners of the tournament will pocket one million dollars donated by Banks DIH Ltd while the runners-up receive $300,000. The 3rd and 4th place finishers will take home $200,000 and $100,000 respectively. Several other corporate entities have pitched in to ensure the tournament is successful including MACORP, Busta, Sterling Products, John Fernandes, GT&T, TCL, CIDI and the Vieira brothers of Houston.
