Dear Editor,
The commercial arm of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) known as Cricket Guyana Incorporated (CGI) has announced the awarding of 12 tier 4 contracts to the local players. I am indeed impressed with the thought process since I believe that they deserve even much more than a monetary incentive to train, practice and remain fit.
In fact I hope that the Cricket Development Committee which was once headed by Mr. Alfred Mentore is functional and that there is a blue print of recommendations which will facilitate the success of this plausible initiative. If not, this will be an exercise that will only exemplify short term results.
The GCB had also announced that other players were considered but they were already obligated to contracts abroad. I would assume that such players included Anthony Adams, BrianSattaur and Sharaz Ramcharran among others. Sattaur and Ramcharran featured significantly in Guyana’s Under-19 successes in 2014 and they have a bright future, while Adams has endured sustained success at the inter-county level, yet it appears that he has failed to impress the national selectors.
I am also pleased that the services of Coach Michael Franco Hyles has been acquired for the academy since his expertise, experience and tough stance will bring the best out of the emerging talents. There has been no mention of Orin Bailey who has given pivotal and incisive services to the GCB over the years; an addition I believe that will further strengthen the capacity building of the team of Coaches.
While the players have all expressed their satisfaction and appreciation of the GCB’s modelled conception, they will challenge the GCB to match their expectations with timely and responsive actions. Such actions from the GCB shall include transparent and clearly out-lined selection policies, timely payment of their remunerations, insurance and other securities in case of injuries and providing an environment that is conducive towards building a harmonious relationship between the Board and themselves.
It is indeed quite encouraging to note the conscientious intention of the GCB to provide an opportunity for players to master their skill in every department. However, it should be done through consultation with key stakeholders including county boards, recognition of target areas of planning and ultimately to execute such a plan with a firm path of direction. I hope that this was the case and therefore I am anticipating a positive outcome for the players and the GCB for this novel project. In the meanwhile it is a workable and a commendable exercise, with the main beneficiaries being the players.
