The Guyana Police Force will certainly be hoping that the current downward trend of criminal activity continues, especially as they focus their energies on maintaining law and order in the run-up to General Elections in three months’ time.
Figures released by the Criminal Investigation Department have revealed that serious crimes, which comprise murder, robbery under arms, robbery with violence, robbery with aggravation, larceny from the person, break and enter and larceny, burglary, rape, and kidnapping went down by 12 percent as at the end of January this year when compared with the same period in 2014.
With regards to murders, the force recorded 12 up to January 31 this year compared with 17 for the same period last year; a decrease of 29 percent.
Among the murders was the execution of Patricia Sanasie, who was gunned down in front of her Atlantic Gardens, East Coast Demerara home on January 11. It is one of four murders that occurred on the East Coast of Demerara during the period in question.
These include the murders of Timehri minibus driver Yamsham Ram called ‘Yankee’, Mahaica Creek Accountant, Suresh Nandkishore and Albion senior citizen Ramdai Mohabir.
The police Interior Division also recorded four murders during January.
So far this month there have been four more murders.
There was also a big drop in robbery under arms which showed a 28 percent decrease up to January 31st. Less robberies were committed with the use of firearms. There has also been substantial decreases in the occurrences of burglary and break and enter and larceny with 15% and 18%, respectively.
