Deochan Raghubar was yesterday sentenced to two months in jail and fined $25,000 by City Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Edmond, after he pleaded guilty to the offence of fraudulent misrepresentation.
The court heard that on January 17, last, Raghubar was handed $11,500 to purchase alcohol for businessman, Rawle Barclay, but Barclay never got the money.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal James Garnett told the court that on the day in question, on South Street Georgetown, Barclay gave Raghubar the money to go to Narine’s Liquor Store on Robb Street. Raghubar was to purchase 24 quarter bottles of high wine, and 24 quarter bottles of vodka for Barclay’s business. Raghubar never returned, and Barclay reported the incident to the City Constabulary Headquarters.
He then saw Raghubar on Friday, last, and held onto him, and asked for his money. Raghubar confessed that he had used the money for his own purposes, and Barclay handed him over to the police.
Raghubar pleaded guilty to the charge and explained that he was greatly disappointed in himself. Recounting the incident, he said that he never made it to the liquor store, because on his way, he dropped $2000, and told the magistrate, “if you do the calculations you will see the change was $9,500”. This was the beginning of a series of unfortunate events. Raghubar said that in order to recover $2000, he went to the “gamble table”, where his day went “from bad to worse’.
He claimed that while at the table, people were trying to rob him and a fight broke out, which resulted in Raghubar losing sight in one of his eyes. He said he decided to take the remainder of the money to eat, purchase “black weed” and alcohol for himself.
“I greatly regret what I have done, ‘cause I can’t see in one of my eye… I cry out to Jesus Christ, I can’t see out my eye,” Raghubar told the court yesterday.
Raghubar admitted that he was charged before, more than twice for littering, and had done community service.
Corporal Garnett said that although Raghubar was honest enough to admit his previous encounters with the law, he had taken a step-up from littering this time.
While handing down his sentence, the magistrate offered Raghubar a brochure on addition and rehabilitation, to help with his problems.
