Watched by the Commander of ‘A’ Division, Clifton Hicken, footballers of the Guyana Police Force ‘needled’ their counterparts of Pouderoyen to move on to the quarter final round when play in the Mayor’s Cup Football Championship continued at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground last Monday evening.
Rondell Arthur scored in the 77th minute for the lawmen moments before Calvin Shepherd (14) and Dwayne Fordyce (60) sealed the deal for the GFC 2-0, when that team opposed Den Amstel in the feature attraction.
The latter match was ferociously contested as both teams went for the jugular. The concomitant result of such fierce rivalry saw the referee flicking out several yellow cards and Mervin Henry (Den Amstel) sent off after receiving two such cautions. Delon Lanferman also received a yellow card in a game that really got physical at times.
The Policemen also continued their good showing and following their 7-0 humiliation of Haslington Sparta United, seemed to have been reinvigorated. They battled for all of the first session but neither side was able to score.
Pouderoyen striker, Adam Hoyte came closest to breeching the Police goal when he managed to blaze past their defenders and tucked in a simple shot; the dreaded whistle signaling offside rendered his effort inconsequential.
His colleague, Clement Brown, then wended his way to the GFC goal but was fouled ninety yards from the goal area. The kick was powerful but nonetheless was unable to breach the impregnable wall ‘constructed’ by the lawmen.
The game was also characterized by near misses while players from both teams were guilty of squandering simple chances but in the end it was the policemen than held their nerve to advance to the quarter final stage.
The players receive a well deserved three days rest that ends on Friday when quarter final action commences. The policemen will get an opportunity to claim a spot among the big boys when they play Pele while Riddim Squad will lock horns with Slingerz.
Two other quarter final matches are also slated for Sunday when Fruta Conquerors battle the GFC before Western Tigers take on Ann’s Grove. The winning team will pocket one million dollars while the runners up will win $300,000 with the 3rd and 4th places winning $200,000 and $100,000 respectively.
