The cabin area of a trawler which was docked on the left bank of the Pomeroon
River was destroyed by fire around 10:00 hours yesterday. Fortunately, the two workers who were welding at the time did not suffer any injuries.
Workers were forced to cut the rope which was tied to the boat in an attempt to moor it on the opposite side of the Pomeroon River to avoid a major catastrophe as there were two other boats moored in close proximity.
Once the trawler had made it over to the other side of the River, workers continued to extinguish the flames as calls to the fire service stationed at Anna Regina were also posted.
Members of the fire service, who arrived promptly, were able to successfully contain the fire to the interior of the boat.
A private play school in Charity was forced to close temporarily due to the smoke which was emanating from the engulfed trawler.
The trawler reportedly belongs to a fisherman from the West Coast of Demerara.
