The competitive matches that have characterized the Mayor’s Cup Football Championship continue to attract fair sized crowds and those that trooped to the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) Ground last Sunday evening could not have asked for more competitive action when the curtains came down on the night’s proceedings.
In the opening fixture, Cougars took the fight to Pele and the latter unit had to pull out all the stops to eventually clinch a 3-2 victory, while Conquerors and New Amsterdam United (NAU) battled to a 2-2 stalemate during regulation time that sent the game into extra time. Once again, the teams battled to a nil all finish for the game to be decided on penalty kicks; Conquerors eventually prevailed 4-3.
Daniel Wilson (23) and Jermaine Junor (50) scored for Conquerors in the regulation period while Adrian Adams netted both of NAU goals in the 41st and 51st minutes.
Pele owe a debt of gratitude to Konata Manning who netted a brace in the 20th and 64th minutes, while Marlan Nedd stitched in a 70th minute effort. Earland Hinds (16) and Roger Crandon (61) narrowed the score, albeit inconsequentially, for NAU.
The action continued last evening when the Guyana Police Force opposed Pouderoyen while the GFC played Den Amstel. Those results will appear in tomorrow’s edition.
The players will then enjoy a few days rest and resume fierce rivalry on Friday when the quarterfinals matches will be played.
The only savior of Guyana.
