Hopetown Warriors of West Berbice made a dramatic entry into the Anamayah Memorial first division basketball competition for teams in Berbice by drubbing fellow West Berbice team, Ithaca Hardliners 49-19, when play in the competition continued on Sunday at the Ithaca Basketball Court.
Hopetown Warriors back in competitive Basketball after a lull were prepared for and never gave the Hardliners a chance in their own backyard.
Showing no signs of their absence from the court the Warriors were all over their opponents from jump ball and raced away to a 15-5 lead at the first quarter. They maintained their momentum trying a few different combinations, settings and plays to go to the half time break with a 20-10 lead.
It was more of the same thing in the third quarter as the Warriors continued with a few more experiments to end the quarter at 26-15.
The final segment was a complete blow out as the Hopetown Warriors let loose to demoralize their opponent, scoring 23 points to the softened Hardliners’ 4 for the eventual 49-19 demolition in their own backyard.
Jerold Allen led the way for Hopetown Warriors with a game high 15, while he was supported by Sherlon Gillis with 10. Phillip Edwards and Deon Clements notched 5 points each for the shattered Hardliners.
President of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) Nigel Hinds was on hand to view the game and presented two pairs of trunks to each player from both teams. He also presented whistles, ball bags and referee’s jerseys to the teams to be used by officials during the games.
The competition is expected to continue on Sunday when Canje Knights come up against Rose Hall Town Jammers at the Rose Hall Town Basketball Court, New Amsterdam.
The competition is being coordinated by Vibert Garrett. (Samuel Whyte)
