A West Berbice man who was stabbed in his left eye by a man who is said to be of unsound mind, died a few days later at the Georgetown Hospital.
According to information Dexter Sandford, called “Killerwood”, 30, of Lot 28 Paradise West Coast Berbice died last Friday, after he was poked in the left eye on the 2nd February by the mentally challenged man after they became involved in an argument.
Kaieteur News understands that the 58 year old suspect, who hails from the neighbouring village of Golden Fleece, would do odd jobs around the community.
Persons would taunt him and he would become annoyed. The situation is not clear as to how Sandiford got injured. However, according to his relatives, on the day in question he left home to purchase a phone card.
The suspect was at a rum shop nearby and suddenly grabbed a quarter-inch steel rod and pushed it at Sandiford, wounding him in his left eye.
Sandiford fell to the ground and struck his head.
He started to bleed profusely, was picked up and rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital. He was further transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital but his condition was so severe that he had to be immediately transferred to the Georgetown Hospital for emergency treatment.
Sandiford remained in an unconscious condition and was unable to breathe on his own. He succumbed around 04:30 hrs on Friday.
The family described Sandiford as jovial and.
A post mortem examination is expected to be performed on Sandiford’s body shortly. The suspect remains in custody and charges are likely soon.
