The Cliff Anderson Sports Hall was the place of rhythm, harmonies and cheers, yesterday, as the Mashramani Pan-o-rama Steel Band competition completed its final day of activities.
The event was organized by the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport in collaboration with Republic Bank Guyana, with the latter investing up to $2.8M.
The final stretch of the contest saw a total of 13 bands competing in three categories: the Small School Bands, Large School Bands and Large Bands.
Emerging as victors in the Small School Band category was Dolphin Secondary, with Lodge Secondary placing second and West Demerara’s rendition of “On Mash Day” coming third.
In the Large School Band category, Buxton Pride, a clear audience favourite, was awarded first place. The judges then awarded North Ruimveldt Secondary second position while Bishop’s High School placed third.
After much deliberation the results of the Large Band category was met with a controversial reaction from the audience as the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport Steel Orchestra copped first place. The category was rounded out with a tie for second place between the Parkside Steel Orchestra and the Guyana Defence Force steel band.
Pan-o-rama was part of Mashramani 2015 festivities, with this year’s theme for the Republic Day celebration being “One People, One Culture, One Celebration”.
