Last two round of 16 games set for tonight
Slingerz FC, led by a 28th minute goal from Vurlon Mills with support from Julian Wade in the 59th minute, sent Mahaica Determinators packing 2-0 when the action continued in the Mayor’s Cup Football Championship at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) Ground last Saturday evening. The trend of upsets also continued when powerhouse, Guyana Defence Force went down 4-3 to Ann’s Grove.
Tonight’s action will pit the skills of the Guyana Police Force against Pouderoyen, while the GFC would be at home to Den Amstel and the lawmen will want to continue their good showing continued from their decisive 7-0 humiliation of Haslington Sparta United FC just over a week ago. Striker, Rawle Haynes had led that onslaught with a hat-trick and he will be expected to replicate this feat.
Nevertheless, he is not alone in the fight and will also bank on his team mates who have risen to the call in earlier games. Allistair Wilson, Anthio Wallace, James Bowman, and Rawle Thornhill had all contributed in their team’s last victory and much will be expected from them. Further, the lawmen can call on defender, Deon Rodney and striker, Rondell Arthur if the need arises.
Pouderoyen has earned the bye to tonight’s game and though this is their inaugural match, their coach, Adrian Gittens, who also patrols the midfield cordon, is assured that his team will be triumphant. He said that he has a strong force that comprises of fellow midfielder, strikers, Clement Brown and Quessie Allen. He is also placing his confidence in his defender, Dellion Josiah. “We will win this one by at least 3 clear goals,” he prophesied.
GFC has been successful in their previous game against Uitvlugt and is hardly likely to change their line-up. Dwayne Lawrence had been the man to lead them to victory with a valuable brace and he received support from the dependable Calvin Shephard.
Their adversaries Den Amstel has a formidable team that will be led by captain, Maurice Charles, a central defence player, and midfielders, Travis Hilliman and Mervin Henry while Deleon Lanferman and Andre Hector will lead the strike force. Coach, O’Neil Heywood, said that his men are primed up and rearing to go.
Asked to predict a winner the coach said, “We are considered one of the big teams and the pattern where those teams are being booted out of the tournament has made me very cautious about predictions.” However, he did say that his team would bring their best game to the field tonight.
