Kelvin Bates, 18, a cane cutter of Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, Berbice was sentenced to four years in jail, yesterday, by Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh when he appeared before him at the Albion Magistrate’s Court on a charge of robbery with violence. Bates, a court regular, is accused of robbing Nalani Jagandan, 22, of 780 Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, Berbice, of one gold chain whilst using violence against her.
According to Prosecutor Sergeant Althea Solomon, on Wednesday January 28, the woman with her elderly grandmother and smaller sister had journeyed to Nigg Settlement, Corentyne, to visit a Hindu temple in the back of the village. The three women were wearing a lot of jewelry.
They had completed their business and were on their way home, when Bates who was riding a bicycle rode past them then turned back and snatched the gold chain from the woman who fell to the ground.
He proceeded to hit her on the head and was in the process of relieving her of other jewelry when a taxi driver came up. Bates made an attempt to flee, but was chased and arrested.
He was taken to the Albion Police Station, from where he made another bid to escape, but was chased and apprehended by the police.
In court he pleaded guilty.
