General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Clement Rohee, on Monday, told the media that the party’s youth arm—the Progressive Youth Organization (PYO)—is already on the road doing its part to ensure PPP retains executive power.
Rohee was at the time responding to questions about the strength of the body.
The General Secretary said that the PYO and the Women’s Progressive Organization (WPO) “have always been and always will be the pillars of PPP”.
“It is the Party’s reservoir, particularly the PYO, where most of us would have come from. It is where we train our youth leaders.”
He explained that youths of the PYO are trained to “follow, as best as possible, in the direction that the party is going.”
“At this point and time as we approach elections, they are out there doing their work, they have had several outreaches and I understand they plan to do more…particularly in respect of mobilizing young people,” said Rohee.
He added that he is of the strong opinion that “the core of young people will contribute significantly and in a very dynamic way to the campaign of the party as it goes into elections. I am very optimistic about the role they will play and the party will always support the youth arm”.
Rohee said that Minister of Housing and Minister of Tourism, Irfaan Ali is “one of the guiding lights in the PYO.” He said that Ali, Chairman of the PYO, is very vibrant and he labeled him “the right man for the job.”
