The Government Analyst Food and Drug Department,(GAFDD) is advising all consumers to purchase foods that are properly packaged, sealed and labeled, especially foods such as flour, milk powder, powdered spice and salt sauces.
According to a statement from the regulatory body, the label information of all packaged foods should be in compliance with provisions of the Food and Drug Act and Regulations of 1977.
The department in the statement detailed that labels must state clearly the name by which the food is commonly known, the name (brand name and address of the manufacturer, the country of origin, a batch / lot number and best before / expiry date. Additionally, a complete list of ingredients must be declared with relevant storage information in English and displayed in a legible manner.
Consumers are advised to purchase items of food that are properly labeled, since unlabeled food can be adulterated expired, contaminated with diseases, producing spoilage micro-organism, chemicals and physical particles.
This, the GAFDD release said, can result from poor hygiene practices during handling processing or suitable or inadequate repacking facility/sanitary conditions.
It is also in accordance with Food and Drug Act 1971 and Food and Drug Regulations 1977 Section (8) “Any person who manufactures, prepares, preserves, packages or stores for sale any food under insanitary conditions is guilty of an offence “
According to the GAFDD, failure to ensure that the product is properly labeled could also give an erroneous impression regarding the characteristic, composition, value and quantity of some commodities at the time of purchase; for example skimmed milk powder can be mixed with full cream milk powder. The department wishes to encourage food factories, supermarkets and other proprietors to offer for sale properly packaged sealed and labeled items of food.
Consumers can be assured of the safety of products (brand) that are properly sealed, produced to specifications and are sold under the required conditions.
Persons desirous of repacking items of food must be in possession of a permit to repackage from the department. Such persons must be in possession of food handlers ID card and be able to maintain safe hygienic practices and sanitary conditions of the premises used for repackaging the items.
