Wins NSC’s 40-mile Road race
At 22 Christopher Holder registered his first victory on his come-back trail by yesterday winning the National Sports Commission (NSC) sponsored 40-mile Road race organised by National Cycle Coach Hassan Mohamed in a time of 1 hour, 44 minutes and 6 seconds. This was four minutes and 7 seconds slower than the time set by last year’s Champion Orville Hinds, riding for Team Evolution.
The race, the third for the new season, began at the West Demerara end of the Demerara Harbour Bridge (DHB) to Busy Park in Parika and back to Bridge which was at one time, the longest floating bridge in the World. The DHB was commissioned on July 2, 1978 is exactly 1.25 miles.
Holder, who was out of the sport for over a year made a statement yesterday as he crossed the finish line ahead of Michael Anthony, Akeem Wilkinson, Alanzo Greaves, Paul DeNobrega and
Mark Harris in that order in the Senior category.
Holder had said recently that he was looking forward to racing on the track this year. “I hope we have a few track races locally this year. If I am good, I hope my club or Guyana select me to race on the Velodrome this year,” Holder had said.
Although his time was slower than last year’s winning time Holder, who won Open Road races as a 16-year-old added that the first month of racing might be hard for him. “I will be slow, since I’m not on the bike fully as yet but I wouldn’t let it get to me, I aim to have a strong year and that’s where I’m heading,” the Team Coco rider said.
Marlon Williams won the season opener at the National Park, while Michael Anthony won the second event the next day in Berbice as Alonzo Greaves had to settle for second place in both races.
Jamal John won the ‘Juniors’ ahead of Raphael Leung and Jaleel Jackson, while Junior Niles took the first spot in the ‘Veterans’ with Talim Shaw and Andrew Spencer finishing second and third respectively.
In the Mountain Bike category Deeraj Garbarran won from Seon Budhan and Garfield Lorimer in that order, while Toshawana Doris won the Female race.
Last year Raul Leal took the Juniors title, Robin Persaud emerged champions among the Veterans while Richard Charles won in the Mountain Bike division.
