Several flights between New York and Guyana have been affected as the US northeast yesterday braced for one of the worst snowstorm in its history.
Caribbean Airlines yesterday warned that travel could be affected up to this weekend. Fly Jamaica in a notice said that its Rockaway office was closed around 15:00 hrs yesterday and unlikely to open today.
According to Caribbean Airlines, it has decided to waive all change/cancellation fees and fare differences for customers set to travel yesterday and today to and from JFK Airport. “Customers may rebook their flights for travel through Saturday, January 31, 2015 prior to the departure of their originally scheduled flight.
Customers with cancellations or significantly delayed flights may opt for a refund at a service charge of US$50. Original travel must have been booked on or before Sunday, January 25, 2015.”
The Trinidad-owned airline said its teams are working “diligently” to minimize the impact on schedules and will advise of new departure times as they become available.
“As of noon (yesterday), we have cancelled, delayed or consolidated many flights to/from JFK for today and tomorrow, and other changes could be expected depending on the severity and clean-up required after the storm. For real-time updates on affected flights and new departure/arrival times, please visit our FLIGHT STATUS tool on our website at www.caribbean-airlines.com prior to leaving for the airport.”
Yesterday, over 7,000 flights in the US were cancelled.
Nearly every big airline also said that it would waive change fees for customers scheduled to fly into dozens of airports in the path of the storm.
As of 1:25 p.m., more than 2,630 flights had been canceled nationwide for Monday and another 3,326 on Tuesday, according to flight-tracking service FlightAware.
Even for Wednesday, more than 220 flights had been preemptively canceled as airlines try to anticipate the storm’s extended impact. In total, that put the airlines’ collective storm-related cancellations at more than 6,175 for the period stretching from Monday through Wednesday.
It also began to appear increasingly likely that few — if any — flights would operate Tuesday at five major airports: New York JFK, Newark Liberty, New York LaGuardia, Boston and Philadelphia. Other airports in the region, including Hartford and Providence — could also see most Tuesday flights grounded.
American Airways, the nation’s biggest carrier after merging with US Airways, tells Today in the Sky that it will have “very limited operations tomorrow (Tuesday) in the Northeast.” The airline adds its current plan is “to suspend operations late this afternoon” and all day Tuesday at Philadelphia, Newark Liberty, New York LaGuardia, New York JFK and Boston.”
