Two accused horse rustlers were taken before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Friday to face a charge of simple larceny.
Charles Romeo, a horse cart operator of Lot 231 Kaneville, East Bank Demerara and Danny Narine were charged with stealing Orandi Ramalho’s $180,000 stallion between December 24 and December 25, last, at Lamaha and Cowan Streets, Georgetown.
They pleaded not guilty.
Police Prosecutor, Inspector Michael Grant, told the court that on Christmas Eve Day, Ramalho tied his horse on a piece of vacant land and left it there to graze. According to Grant, when the man returned on Christmas Day, the animal was gone.
The Prosecutor said that the matter was reported and after a diligent search, the horse was found in the horse cart operator’s possession. He told the Police ranks that Narine sold him the stallion, the prosecutor said.
They were arrested. Grant said that Narine confessed to stealing the animal. The Prosecutor objected to bail. The court heard that Narine was previously charged with simple larceny in relation to some cattle at the Providence Magistrate’s Court.
Narine was remanded to prison while Romeo was released on $50,000 bail. The Prosecution was ordered to file statements and the matter was transferred for hearing tomorrow before Magistrate Annette Singh.
