The issue of security at the country’s Magistrate’s Courts once again came into focus when a prisoner hurled a wooden bench at a sitting Magistrate after she sentenced him to four years imprisonment.
Magistrate Zamena Ali hurriedly fled into her chambers while the few police ranks in her court restrained the irate prisoner.
Delon Boucher and his brother Devon were on trial for attempting to commit a felony stemming from a botched break and enter sometime last year. The men had shown violent tendencies shortly after they were arrested when they attacked and wounded a police detective in the Cove and John Station. They had also damaged the state’s property during their confrontation with ranks at the same station. On Wednesday, after a lengthy trial, Magistrate Ali found them both guilty and sentenced them to four years imprisonment.
An angry Delon Boucher got up and grabbed the bench he was sitting on and hurled it in the direction of the Magistrate, who was sitting a mere 20 feet away.
Luckily for the Magistrate, her orderly acted quickly and intercepted the airborne bench before it could reach its intended target. The terrified Magistrate quickly sought refuge in her chambers, while the prisoner continued to hurl verbal abuses at her. He was eventually handcuffed and taken away. The two prisoners, however, will have to reappear before the same Magistrate for the continuation of the trial relating to the assault on the peace officer and the damage to property. Kaieteur News understands that Wednesday’s incident prompted an emergency meeting among Magistrates as the issue of proper security within the confines of the courtroom once again solicited intense discussions.
While some high profile prisoners who show violent tendencies are shackled and taken to court, their handcuffs are usually removed once they enter the courtroom.
There have been several security breaches in the court, including prisoners being found with prohibited items.
In one case a city Magistrate had expressed great concern when a cell phone that was in a prisoner’s trousers pocket rang out in her court. “Suppose it was a gun!” she had admonished the police ranks present.
