– shoot guard, take away gun
Two persons had to be hospitalised after a daring afternoon robbery at the Guyana National Industrial Company (GNIC) shipyard on Lombard Street yesterday.
Currently being treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation are GNIC Payroll Clerk, Darren Bryan and security guard, Oslen Clarke.
Kaieteur News understands that Bryan arrived at the facility to pay workers of the various departments when a man dressed in grey and wearing a helmet and shades came up from behind and gun-butted him. He was ordered to drop the cash.
The confused payroll clerk apparently thought that the man was a security guard for the compound and did not immediately react.
He was again struck behind the head and complied, dropping the cash. It was quickly picked up by the gunman who left on a waiting motorcycle.
A worker, who related his experience, said that he heard a gunshot and immediately ordered the other employees to find safety in the nearby building. He discovered Clarke lying in a pool of blood with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the leg.
Police in a statement said that around 15:35hrs, Bryan and Clarke, who are attached to the GNIC, were attacked and robbed in the Lombard Street compound by two men, one of whom was armed with a handgun.
“Investigations have revealed that Darren Bryan was in possession of salaries for workers and was being escorted by Oslen Clarke to the payment area when the two perpetrators entered the compound and held them at gunpoint.”
Clarke was shot to his left foot and his service .32 revolver and rounds taken away. Some $600,000 was taken from Bryan by the bandits who escaped on a motorcycle.
