The story of the 13-year-old boy at the center of the Berbice Anjuman Orphanage scandal has taken a vicious twist with the boy at the centre at the scandal recanting on his story. What is even more perturbing is that the boy at the centre of the episode is not in protective custody. Instead he has been roaming the street and doing whatever he pleases.
He has been going around telling people what he says is the correct version of the story. He is also denying that anything ever happen to him. He said that he was never sodomised; that he was promised money to say what he did, in a set up.
Kaieteur News had reported on the matter earlier that the boy was out on the street roaming and officials of the Child Protection Agency had stated that they were not aware of the circumstances. On one occasion he was found sleeping in a car around 01:00 hrs.
Immediately after that publication the boy was taken into custody and whisked away to some safe place in Georgetown. However the boy was soon, back on the streets, roaming. He told persons that he got away from where he was being held and started revisiting the Orphanage.
The principals of the Orphanage have expressed disgust that the lad is being allowed to roam the streets and they are eager for him to be placed in protective custody until the conclusion of the story. They are concerned that the name of the Orphanage might be tarnished further if anything becomes of him.
An official had stated that the boy and his sister were returned to the custody of their mother. However a source knowledgeable in such matters stated that since the lad and his sister were taken away from his mother due to her unsuitable state, they should not have been returned to the woman.
After the boy had made the allegations of being sodomised with five other boys, investigations by both the police and Child Protection Agency later determined that most of the allegations were not true. Medical examination revealed that they were never harmed.
The boy has since gone to great lengths to tell what he said is his story that the entire thing was a set up, that he was promised $250,000.
The boy has been returning to the Orphanage on a regular basis since he says that he is constantly hungry. Owner of the Orphanage Mr. Abu Mandal is also upset that up to now no one has spoken to him concerning the matter.
