– three players benefit
Following the announcement of a 26-man squad that will be encamped from Thursday ahead of the February 1st international friendly against host Barbados, National Goalkeeper Coach Andrew ‘Flours’ Hazel and Technical team are on the path of widening the goalkeeper pool.
In the 26-man list that was released to the public last week, two goalkeepers would have been included in Oswald Cornette, O’Neil Carter and overseas based Akel Clarke but the Technical Staff has since sought to evaluate three more players in this specialist area.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport, Andrew Hazel, the National Goalkeeper Coach who has been holding that position since 2009 said that the decision was taken by the Technical staff to take a look at some other contenders for the position with a view of widening the pool.
“As a result of that we invited Rondell Allen of Grove Hi Tech, Derville Stuart of Riddim Squad and Romario James who is based in the USA.”
Hazel informed that the players were taken through the paces over a two-day period at the National Park and showed a high level of commitment and teamwork throughout the sessions.
The players were exposed to sessions on positional awareness, distribution, crossing, body positioning, agility and the technique of catching among others.
“The sessions were well received by these players and I do believe that we have achieved something from the short investment. We will now sit down as a Technical Staff and look back at what was done before taking a decision going forward.”
