The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) is expected to showcase its next generation of players, including Cadets, 15 years and under players and juniors 18 years and under from 9am on February 1 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The GTTA is extending an invitation to cadet and junior players around the country to take part. The association “will meet after this tournament to shortlist players to continue preparing for the Caribbean Cadet/Junior Table Tennis tournament scheduled for April in the Dominican Republic, also to set a date to meet with parents,” a press release highlighted.
Those wishing to participate in the tournament will have to register before a January 30 deadline.
The format of the tournament includes two stages. Groups will be conformed as necessary, and they will compete according to a Round Robin system.
In addition, the matches will be played using the current International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) rules: 11 point game; best of five or best of seven games; two points alternate serve and the first two players of each group will qualify for the final stage.
In the quarterfinals for the juniors, it will be seven games to win four, while the cadet will be five games to win three by a Simple Elimination System.
The association also informed that on February 8, the GTTA will be going through a fitness test for national and future national table tennis players, as part of the GTTA selection criteria, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, beginning at 2pm.
Meanwhile, the National Sports Commission (NSC)/GTTA Annual Mashramani Tournament is officially set to begin on February 13 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. The competition, which will feature mini-cadet (9 years and under), pre-cadet (13 years and under), cadet (15 years and under) juniors (18 years and under), 21 years and under and senior categories, is open to all the affiliated members of the association.
Those wishing to participate will have to register before a February 11 deadline. The competition will be held across two weekends with the mini-cadets, cadets and junior contests, being held on February 13-15, while the senior competition will be hosted the following weekend.
