The Golden Grove/Nabaclis Library on the East Coast of Demerara got a timely boost when eight-year-old Amara Andrews donated her collection of books.
On Friday the young St. Gabriel’s Primary School student decided to make the donation after she got fed up of reading and re-reading her vast collection.
“My parents and my aunts always give me books and they keep piling up and filling up my room, so I had to get rid of them. And besides, my father said that if I give them away, I will get more,” said the Nabaclis native.
Her proud parents agreed with her and promised to replenish her stock.
Accepting the donation on behalf of the library was Annie Charles, Senior Local Assistant at the Golden Grove/Nabaclis community centre.
She said that the donation was timely since the facility has embarked on a programme aimed at encouraging young people to read more.
She however expressed disappointment at the response and hoped that the injection of new material would whet the appetites of those who are inclined to read.
Charles said that she would like to see more people donating their books instead of letting them gather dust on the shelves.
