Malteenoes-bred, Shemar Britton, another product of National Coach, Idi Lewis, could not have asked for a better start to his 2015 Season on Sunday when he comfortably won Guyana’s Table Tennis Association (GTTA) Open Senior Championships.
Entering as the second seed in the tournament, Britton brilliantly overcame his Malteenoes team-mate, Kyle Edghill 11-8, 8-11, 14-12, 10-12, 11-3 and 11-4 to win the tournament as Paul Meusa and Joel Alleyne shared the third place position.
In the semi finals, Britton defeated fourth seeded, Joel Alleyne 11-9, 11-8, 7-11, 11-8, 7-11 and 11-8 while Edghill defeated Meusa, the number three seed, 9-11, 11-9, 4-11, 12-10, 11-8, 9-11 and 14-12 in a pulsating encounter that went down to the wire.
In the quarterfinals, Edghill had defeated the tournament’s number one seeded, Orin Hickerson 10-12,11-5,11-7 and11-5; Meusa stopped Colin France 9-11, 11-5, 11-9, 11-3 and 11-5; Alleyne beat Jonathan Sankar 11-6, 9-11, 11-7, 7-11, 11-7 and 11-5 as Britton defeated Elishaba Johnson 11-8, 9-11, 11-8, 11-8, 9-11 and 11-6 to advance to the last four.
Meanwhile, in Round-of-16, Hickerson got a bye into the quarter finals, while Edghill defeated Dwayne Gibson 11-7, 11-8, 4-11 and 11-8; France defeated Xenophon Goliah 11-8, 2-11, 13-15, 13-11 and 11-6; Meusa and Alleyne got free passes while Sankar defeated Remy Taitt 11-5, 11-2 and 11-5; Devon Richmond lost to Johnson 8-11, 7-11 and 4-11 with Britton also receiving a bye into the final eight.
The tournament featured 24 players from around the country, including two females, Kristie Lopes and Selenas Jackman. Britton collected a trophy and $12,000 while second place received a trophy and $8,000; joint third place collected a trophy and $6,000 each. All quarterfinalists got $3000 each.
Jonathon Sankar, Orin Hickerson and GTTA President, Godfrey Munroe were the sponsors of the inaugural event for this new year.
