Diligent application and hard work over the past year has netted Sheman Gittens and Dashana Reid the coveted prizes of Male and Female Racewalkers of the year when the executives of the Cavalier Sports and Tour Club (CS&TC) held an award ceremony at their headquarters, 40 East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, Wednesday January 7 last.
The two athletes have been very consistent, carting off most of the top prizes in races held throughout the year and easily won the awards. Enoch Allicock was the male runner up while his female counterpart, Jennel Gildhari clinched the runner up spot in her category. The organizers also recognized the efforts of Kevin George and ruled that he was the most promising racewalker for the year.
Several corporate citizens and entities have contributed towards the sustenance of the sport and the organizers decided that Public Service Minister, Jennifer Webster and Managing Director of Modern Optical Service, Dr Jose DaSilva were the joint winners in this category, while the Hand in Hand Insurance Company was adjudged the runners up.
Kaieteur News also received commendations when the organizers ruled that the newspaper had provided consistent coverage of the sport. Consequently, Sports Journalist of that entity, Michael Benjamin, received the Media Award for his efforts in promoting the sport.
Meanwhile, the management of the CS&TC has launched its ‘Road to Brazil’ campaign in preparation of participation in the 2016 Brazil Olympiad. Officials disclosed that they will be organizing more events while placing greater emphasis on training programmes countrywide. Towards this end, officials have identified several areas in need of support and have issued an appeal to the government and corporate Guyana for support towards the success of the initiative.
The areas identified for funding include the acquisition of training modules, shoes, trunks, jerseys and other training kit, a video camera and accessories and funds to facilitate a much needed training programme. Plans are also in train to host a racewalk coach who will conduct a training programme.
