A 21-year-old Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court clerk accused of embezzling a hefty sum from the court was released on $140,000 bail by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on Friday, last.
Tiffany Ward-Hodge appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and pleaded not guilty to the embezzlement by clerk or servant charge.
The police claim that between March 15 and June 28, 2014, while being employed as a clerk at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court, she fraudulently embezzled $1,365,700, property of the State of Guyana.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Bharat Mangru presented no facts to the court and had no objections to bail.
Her lawyer, Dexter Todd, said that she had been released on $20,000 station bail a year ago and has been making herself available to the police. He said that she has already repaid the money.
Todd said that she was not a flight risk.
Bail was initially granted at $200,000 but following an application, it was reduced. The matter was transferred to the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court and will be called on January 12.
