East Canje Knights were well prepared for battle and fought every second of their encounter to overcome a battle wary New Amsterdam Warriors to book their place in the final of the Banks DIH Classic Basketball competition when the two teams met in the semi-final game played last Wednesday at the Vryman’s Erven Basketball court in New Amsterdam.
The Knights will now meet the Smythfield Rockers in the final slated for tomorrow at the same venue.
In fact the Knights started slowly, but showed fight and never let up although they trailed for most of the match, but were able to wear down the Warriors in the end for a slim come from behind one point win. The Warriors were out fast and took an early lead, but were unable to shake off the persistent Knights. By the end of the first quarter the Warriors were in the lead at 16-11. They extended that lead to 35-21 at the half way stage.
In the third quarter the Knights were beginning to find their range as they fought back to trail 47-40.
The score was 56-59 with minutes remaining as the Knights chipped away for the nail biting 60-59 win.
Keon Emanuel with 16 and Steve Roopnarine with 15 points led the charge for the Knights.
The Warriors battle was a virtual one man show with Randy Caesar leading with a game high 29 points.
The final will be played tomorrow at the Vryman’s Erven basketball court in New Amsterdam. Tip off time is 16:00hrs. At stake are cash incentives and trophies. The organiser is Vibert Garrett.
