-Winners Connection aiming for two-peat, faces Hi Stars
By Rawle Welch
Defending champion Winners Connection will have an opportunity to two-peat when they face Hi Stars in today’s final of the Upper Demerara Football Association/GT Beer Supa 16, at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground.
The reigning title holders must start as firm favourites to retain their crown after displaying the tenacity that is the hallmark of most champions, having to claw their way back on two occasions leading up to the championship game.
In their quarter-final clash against Botofago, Winners Connection had to come from behind to advance to the semis thanks to the experienced and crafty Rawle Gittens, who fired in a brace with a solitary strike coming off the boot of Delroy Dainty.
They faced a similar scenario in their semi-final encounter against Eagles United that took the lead after twenty-three minutes of play, before Gittens got into the act, sending a perfect corner kick into the box for Chris Younge to head home.
Gittens proved to be the architect of doom for opposing sides when he reached on to the end of a cross from the right flank to head past the goalkeeper and give his team the lead shortly before the break.
Not done for the night, Gittens then set up Renee Gibbons in the second period to seal the win for Winners Connection and a place in the final.
Hi Stars who many feel is the surprise package in the competition will start as the underdogs, but Winners Connection must take heed not to underrate them since they’ve already shown a liking for such a tag with the Mining Town’s most famous team Top XX being the latest casualty to them.
Julian Allicock and Stephan Tappin will once again be called upon to lead their quest for victory with secondary support expected from Tony Adams.
What is certain is the fact that New Year’s Day and the MSC has long been associated with football and its Mecca and a large turnout is anticipated as fans come out in support of their respective teams.
The Mining Town of Linden for over two decades has established itself as the place to be on New Year’s Day for football and judging from last year’s crowd, an even bigger turnout is expected, especially with Winners Connection aiming to repeat as champions.
In the playoff for third place, Top XX go head to head with Eagles United and this affair promises to be a sizzler as well with bragging rights, a central theme in this fixture.
The winning team will take home $1million and a trophy.
Kickoff time is 19:00 hrs.
Meanwhile, the Trophy Stall of Bourda Market, has partnered with Banks DIH to sponsor the trophies for today’s third place play-off and final of the UDFA GT Beer Supa 16 at the MSC ground.
